Lane Cove News Week in Review 19th to 26th June 2024

Welcome to our week-in-review.

Chatswood Metro Line to Open in August 2024

The Crows Nest Metro Station will open in August 2024.

Testing has reached its final stages, ahead of the metro services starting in August from Chatswood to the Sydney CBD and out to Sydenham.

This week, the Premier made the following announcement on his Facebook page:

“I’ve got good news. We’re not far off from the official opening of Sydney’s brand-new metro line.

Since April last year, we’ve undertaken nearly 10,000 hours of testing from Tallawong to Sydenham – and we’re ready to hit go.

And once open, it’ll get you from Victoria Cross in North Sydney to Barangaroo in 3 minutes.

All aboard this August.”

The good news is that the metro will take you to Central (unlike the buses).

The bad news is that more buses will terminate at North Sydney rather than going straight to the city.   Read more about the proposed bus changes here.

More On-Street EV Chargers for Lane Cove

In May 2024, we reported that the NSW government announced funding for kerbside EV Chargers, and Lane Cove Council has been earmarked as one of the councils to receive financing for further kerbside charges like the ones installed in Lane Cove last year (see our cover photo).

Kerbside EV Charges are proposed for the following locations:

The following parking restrictions will apply.

Wet Weather Causing Issues with Lane Cove Sportsgrounds

In January 2024, work was undertaken to upgrade the drainage and irrigation at Tantallon Oval.   On the council website, the reason for the upgrades was listed as:

“The works will extend the area’s availability during wet weather and help sustain better turf coverage across the oval.”

Tantallon Oval was closed from January to the start of Autumn sports.

Unfortunately, despite the upgrades, Tantallon Oval is closed, and Lane Cove Rugby Club advised its members that it would be closed again this weekend.

Last Chance to Have Your Say on 14 Gay Street Lane, Cove North – Submissions Close 26 June 2024

Residents must submit their comments on the options for 14 Gay Street Lane Cove North within a few days.

Lane Cove Council is seeking feedback on the three options for the potential future use and management of the property acquired at 14 Gay Street, Lane Cove.

In March 2023, the Council finalised its purchase of 14 Gay Street, Lane Cove, as part of its Bushland Expansion Program.

It is now time for Lane Cove Council to consider the future use and management of the property for the potential use of the northern end of the site – the southern end shall be retained as bushland.

None of the suggested future uses involve retaining the house in its current state, and therefore, it will be demolished.

The area along the western boundary was already owned by the Council as a drainage reserve. It is a natural linkage from Gay Street that provides public access to the southern end of this site. This would be retained and is currently classified as community land.

Have Your Say

Lane Cove Council has prepared a Community Information Package to help provide further detail on the three options provided

It is recommended that the Community Information Package(External link) is read before completing feedback on the three possibilities summarised below:

  1. Subdivide the block and construct a best-practice sustainable home that can be used as a demonstration home before ultimately being sold to recoup part of the land acquisition costs

  2. Subdivide block and build two ‘micro houses’ (dual occupancy) that can be permanently used for affordable housing

  3. Dedicate the entire site to Bushland. i.e. rezone entire site to C2.

Provide your feedback by participating in the survey here.

Alternatively, you can lodge a written submission to the Council by quoting SU9252:

Email: [email protected] or

Post: Lane Cove Council, PO BOX 20, Lane Cove NSW 1595

The consultation closes on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.

Below are photos of powerful owls at and near 14 Gay Street taken by Katy Bowell. Thanks, Katy, for permission to use these fantastic photos.
