After more than five years of setbacks, delays and challenges, Lane Cove Public School is finally celebrating the official opening of its brand-new school hall. The much-anticipated ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on 11th April 2025 at 9.30 am Lane Cove locals are invited to attend and celebrate this significant milestone.
A Long Road to Rebuilding
The journey to this moment has been anything but smooth. It all began in January 2020 when a devastating fire destroyed the original school hall and canteen (read more here).
The initial shock was compounded when hazardous asbestos was discovered at the site, further complicating the clean-up process (more details).
In 2022, construction was finally set to begin, bringing a sense of hope to the school community (read about the commencement). However, just a year later, work came to a grinding halt when the contracted builder, Lloyd Group, went into administration, leaving the project in limbo (full story here).
With numerous bureaucratic hurdles, funding concerns and unexpected delays, the completion date was continuously pushed back. At one stage, it was projected for mid-2024, but frustrations over the slow progress led to questions from the community (see more on delays). The final push came in April 2024 when the newly appointed contractor took over the site during the school holidays to fast-track completion (contractor update).
Principal’s Message
Lane Cove Public School Principal, Terry McKinnon says:
“Losing our hall to fire in January 2020 was a devastating blow to the school and the wider community who had close connections to the hall. It is so pleasing that we now have a state-of-the-art hall which will again become the central meeting place for Lane Cove Public School and the Lane Cove community. It is an impressive and dynamic space where we can gather, perform, celebrate and create new memories. There is an open invitation to anyone who would like to come along and celebrate the opening of our new hall on Friday 11 April at 9.30am.”
From Term 3, the hall will also be available for weekend hire, providing a fantastic space for local events, performances and community gatherings.

Now after years of resilience and determination from the school community, the new hall stands ready to create new memories for students and teachers at the school. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is a chance for past and present students, parents and local residents to celebrate the achievement and reflect on the journey it took to get here.
