Welcome to our Lane Cove News Week In Review.
Lane Cove Commemorates Remembrance Day
This Lane Cove community came together on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, to honour our service men and women at the annual Lane Cove 2025 Remembrance Day Ceremony hosted by the Lane Cove RSL Sub-Branch and Lane Cove Council.
This year’s service took a meaningful twist; rather than focusing on one local veteran, the ceremony paid tribute to senior officers, community leaders and “local lads” whose names live on in our streets via poppy-marked street signs.
Wreaths that were laid during the ceremony are now at the cenotaph beside the Lane Cove Library on the corner of Longeville Road and Austin Street. See our cover photo.

Community Safety Workshop Addresses Local Crime
Residents in the Riverview area of the Lane Cove local government area have reported a troubling string of break-in attempts, which have been occurring every 2–3 weeks by masked men who even wielded an axe at the security camera.
In response, the Lane Cove Council teamed up with the North Shore Police Area Command to hold a Community Safety Workshop, led by Snr Constable Dom Trevor, Crime Prevention Officer. The session focused on home-security best practices and steps residents can take to protect themselves and deter offenders.
Community safety takes all of us. If you live locally, keep your eyes open, stay alert, and lock up. Let’s make our neighbourhood safer together.

Lane Cove Community Groups Letter to Anthony Roberts
Community groups from across the state electorate of Lane Cove have signed a joint letter to local MP Anthony Roberts, urging him to withdraw his support for the rushed Planning System Reforms Bill 2025.
The groups are concerned that the bill will significantly weaken environmental protections, making it harder to protect vulnerable species and critical bushland habitat. Many also fear the centralised decision-making process will effectively silence community voices and make it harder for everyday people to have a say in planning decisions.
Shauna Forrest, Local resident and President of the Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society, said:
“These laws are deeply troubling. Peak environmental groups including the Environmental Defenders Office have sounded the alarm on these reforms – warning that they significantly erode environmental protections.
These laws set up a pathway that explicitly prohibits decision makers from considering things like environmental impacts, site suitability, and the public interest. In places like Lane Cove where our bushland is so important, this could have catastrophic impacts.”
Rochelle Flood, Lane Cove Council Greens Councillor said:
“This bill represents the most significant overhaul of our planning and environment laws in decades, and it’s outrageous that it’s being rushed through Parliament without proper consultation with councils or with local communities.
Last month Lane Cove Council passed my motion to advocate against these reforms and to push for this bill to go out for public consultation.
No one is disputing that we need more affordable housing – but this bill won’t deliver that. Instead, it will undermine our environment laws and lock in poor planning outcomes for years to come. Our community deserves better.”
The resident groups delivered the letter to Anthony Roberts MP on Friday, the 7th November 2025, followed by a protest outside his office.
On 12 November 2025 NSW Premier Chris Minns released the following statment:
“The Minns Labor Government’s landmark Planning System Reforms Bill 2025 has passed both houses of Parliament with overwhelming support, paving the way for a faster, fairer and modern planning system.
The passage of the Bill marks the most significant overhaul of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 in a generation, modernising the foundational legislation of the state’s housing, jobs, infrastructure, and energy delivery.
For decades, the planning system has grown overly complex and slow, holding back the delivery of new homes, job creating investments and adding unnecessary costs and delays to the construction pipeline. These reforms will help clear the bottlenecks and make the system work for communities, councils, and builders alike.
The Bill introduces a suite of changes to streamline planning approvals, provide greater certainty for industry and communities, and cut unnecessary red tape, and has received widespread support through the NSW Parliament.”

Lane Cove Council Receives a Grant to Convert the Lane Cove Leisure and Aquatic Centre from Gas To Electricity
Lane Cove Council has received the largest NSW grant — $1.14 million — from the Federal Government’s Community Energy Upgrades Fund to transform the Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre from gas to electricity.
This significant investment will replace the centre’s gas systems with modern, energy-efficient electric alternatives — cutting emissions, reducing running costs, and helping Lane Cove take a major step toward a cleaner, greener future.
The grant is part of a national $100 million initiative supporting councils across Australia to upgrade community facilities like pools, libraries, and sporting grounds with solar, batteries, and electric systems.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the upgrades will “deliver a cheaper, cleaner energy future for Australia – proof that what’s good for the planet is good for the pocket.”

On Sunday 9th November the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club held its “Try Skiff Sailing” event which was part of the Lane Cove ‘Festival of the River’ celebrations.
Unfortunately the wind really came to the party so it had to be restricted to more experienced sailors. Paired with skilled Club skippers all sailors that ventured out had a great time – the photos tell the story. The Club will rerun the event later in the season for novice and less experienced sailors.
Located next to Longueville Wharf this family-friendly volunteer run dinghy-sailing Club offers school holiday learn to sail camps, Friday Twilights and Saturday racing on the (usually) tranquil Lane Cove River. Learn more here.

This huge monster is making a comeback for the festival. If you didn’t see it last time, make sure you do this time.
It took three weeks to create the monster, with students designing, constructing, painting, and assembling their lantern sculptures using cane, paper, and candlelight.

When: Friday 14th November 2025
Time: 6 pm to 8.30 pm
Where: Greenwich Sailing Club

Picnics, kayaking, and cycling are encouraged. Lane Cove Council will provide picnic rugs, lights, and music.

If You Buy Us A Coffee, it is, in fact, helping to pay the ITC Team
We want to clarify that, yes, the ITC team does support local businesses by drinking coffee, but there is a limit to the number of cups you can drink in a day.
We started the Buy Us A Coffee Campaign as a way to keep local news free and to grow our team. Our team is now comprised of three local mums who work part-time to bring you all the up-to-date news, traffic alerts, incidents, and events. We also now have Walkley Award Nominee Jack Kelly writing articles for us, as well as founder Jacky Barker. We truly appreciate any help you can provide, whether large or small.
How local journalism keeps communities engaged
Local newsrooms play a vital role in keeping communities informed and engaged with the decisions that affect them. Without dedicated coverage of local government, infrastructure, and policy changes, many residents are left uninformed about issues that significantly impact their daily lives. Independent newsrooms help bridge this gap, providing a trusted source of information and giving people a platform to voice concerns. Strong local reporting doesn’t just inform, it fosters public participation and strengthens civic engagement. – extract from the Local and Independent News Association Website
