Lane Cove News Week in Review 12 October to 19 October 2022

Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.

Blackman Park Lighting Upgrade

Works have started to upgrade the lighting at Blackman Park to LED. The fields, basketball area and cricket nets will have new poles and LED lights.  The Dog Park will also have new LED lighting.  Weather permitting, Lane Cove Council expects the works to be finished in December 2022 and they will then fix up the Dog Park.

Speaking of Blackman Park, the Lane Cove Junior Rugby Club started their summer sevens season last Friday night.  Over 900 players have registered.  Matches start with the younger kids and finish with an Adults social comp. There are male, female and mixed-gender teams.   They also have a BBQ and bar.  See our cover photo and the photo below.

Longueville Road Streetscape Upgrade Project

During October, the Lane Cove Council is upgrading the streetscape on Longueville Road.

There will be new flexible outdoor dining options, parklets and seating. The new paving will match the paving in the Lane Cove Plaza.

When the works are completed, some sections of parking on the eastern side of Longueville Road will change from parking to outdoor dining to public seating/park areas and back again.

The aim is to improve the streetscape for pedestrians and businesses and provide a fresh new look.

Lane Cove Contractors are completing the work in stages so that only smaller segments of paving are replaced at any one time.

The first area to be repaved is Birdwood Avenue between Birdwood Lane and Longueville Road.

This week the contractors started on both sides of Longueville Road near the Lane Cove Library.

Part of this project is funded by the ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ project, an initiative of the NSW Government.

It’s also a chance to pick up some free pavers and own a piece of Longueville Rd.

Lane Cove Council is offering the old pavers free to Lane Cove Council residents and businesses – either pick up or free delivery.

They’re in good condition and would be perfect for an outdoor entertaining area or any other projects around your home or business. They’re 230mm x 110mm x 40mm in earthy tones.

To secure some pavers, email [email protected]  with the subject heading “pavers – Longueville Rd” and include

  • Your Name
  • Phone Number
  • Email
  • Home/business address in Lane Cove
  • Required square meters
  • Whether you want to pick up from Blackman Park or your delivery address

Telstra Mobile Outage 18 October 2022

Some Lane Cove Locals experienced issues with their Telstra phone on 18 October from about 6.00 am to 8.30 am.   Nationwide Telstra had issues with the 4G network.

A Telstra Spokesperson advised ITC:

“We’re working to fix an issue that is affecting calls for some of our mobile customers. Data and texts are working.

Restarting your phone or switching Airplane mode on and off may help.

We know this isn’t a good start to the morning and we thank everyone for their patience.”

Telstra customers (including ITC) were frustrated as the Telstra Outage page did not show there was a nationwide issue.

Drones

ITC is regularly asked to help find a drone or find an owner of a drone.

The Federal Government has launched a new website – www.drones.gov.au – to provide Australians with clear information about drone rules and regulations.

The website has been developed to serve as a one-stop-shop for industry, recreational drone users and members of the public, and provides drone users with links to safety requirements as well as a drone noise self-assessment and approval tool.

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government the Hon Catherine King MP said the new website would be a valuable resource for Australian drone users.

“The Australian Government recognises the importance of ensuring information on these regulatory requirements and process is clear and accessible to all members of the public, particularly those who own and operate drones or are thinking of doing so in the future,” Minister King said.

“Rapid and continuous advancements in aviation technology bring opportunities for growth and development, and the launch of this website is another step forward towards unlocking the breadth of benefits of increased uptake of drones supports.

“This website is the place to go for answers and guidance on drone use, no matter the level of expertise, and I encourage those interested to take a look.”

According to recent tweets, he has only been in Australia for a month and was undertaking a PhD at the University of New South Wales. ITC has also been advised that he worked in the kitchen of a Lane Cove restaurant.

This week his family in India pleaded for an urgent visa so they could visit him – an immigration lawyer working on the Gold Coast assisted the family in obtaining an emergency visa.

Parcel Theft

A roving reporter has informed us:

” I live in Taylors Lane in a new apartment building and we’ve had repeated parcel theft incidents.. I just want to know if others also experienced it and what did they do in order to solve it.

I have reported it to the police …There are CCTV cameras on both the main entrances in Taylors Lane and the Longueville side of the building”

Have you experienced Parcel Theft? What is your body corporate doing to assist in reducing parcel theft?
